"Like Stukas Angels Fall"
Hagshadow-Kenaz - 2009
CD
After the sudden and appreciated return on the scene with "Headless" two years ago, Patrick Leagas is back once again, this time with an album intended both as a celebration and a final statement about his early years with Death In June and 6 Comm. On "Like Stukas Angels Fall", in fact, we find a selection of classics reworked and recreated AD 2009, either just recording again the vocal part, or turning the whole song into something new and unexpected. The collection opens with "Kirato e Sonfelte", very different from the classic tune originally appeared on "Morthogenisis", an extremely dark and apocalyptic scenery, with no rhythm at all and Patrick's dramatic vocals at their best. Three songs from the legendary 1987 debut "Content With Blood" follow immediately after: "The Winter Sadness", "Nothing Life" (with more powerful and effective acoustic drums) and "Together In Neiflheim", the latter sounding faster, more electro-oriented than it's original counterpart.
Death In June fans will be happy to find here new versions of the historical "Torture Garden", "Calling", "Carousel" and "Foretold", under different titles and with slightly updated features. In the end, it was Patrick to write those tracks, and it looks natural that he's taking them back. The second half of the CD is made of obscure tunes, such as "Shake The Fear" and "Sow The Wind", originally appeared on a very limited cassette released, and the excellent "Wake Up The World", epic and chilling. Finally "Death Illusion", "Swayling Illusion" and "Tentoflimblessmothers" are extracted from "Headless" itself. The less convincing "Shame On You" and "Like Stukas Angels Fall" are just very short excerpts.
Summing up, this 6 Comm CD is strongly recommended to those who discovered Patrick Leagas' music two years ago with "Headless", or maybe right this year during the European tour. It's exactly to them that the album is aimed to. The old fans who already have the classic albums plus the numerous retrospectives may not find it so essential, unless you want to listen to new versions of the historical songs and the rare ones. Anyway, this is a collection of timeless hymns, between electro, darkwave, martial and neofolk, conceived some 25 years ago and still very much fresh today. 6 Comm, much like Death In June and Sol Invictus, is one of the original pioneers in the genre, even if for unknown reasons criminally underrated. Time now then to pay him the well deserved tribute!
