NIKO SKORPIO
"Psilocybe Necrophila"
Some Place Else - 2009
CD / 418 copies
Finnish Niko Skorpio keeps inebriating us with his rarefied and demonic atmospheres. Hallucinogen drugs growing on decaying flesh. "Psilocybe Necrophila" it's his latest discographic effort, a real distillate of distant echoes coming from the dark chasms of the human soul. Using old heavy metal tapes from the 80s', mostly live and demo recordings worn by the age, Skorpio built the basis for this new hallucinatory journey. He stays true to his usual topics related to death and rebirth, resurrecting the old, igniting new energy into the past, in a constant not just ideal but also sonic metamorphosis. Each sound, each pause, each reverberation acts according to a precise compositive need, where nothing is left to chance.
Six tracks, whose expressive strength can be better grasped with a whole listening experience. With half-closed eyes, following the sound path of "Psilocybe Necrophilia", it feels like wandering suspended above time and life, surrounded by clouds running after each other towards infinity. To quote some of the most significant tracks, "Unended" is certainly one of them. Deep, distant, this second track comes progressively closer, sending us into a cold and disquieting landscape. But, even more disturbing is the following "Untitled", where an ice-cold wind sweeps away everything in a whirlpool of rhythms, crossing themselves to then dissolve. Closing "Backward Trail" has an ethereal and dark soundscape charged by the cursed pathos of distorted vocals and a sick piano. If in the past Niko Skorpio alternated forgettable productions to others of absolute value, with the present work he seems to have reach that point of equilibrium proper of maturity.
