REVOLTING COCKS
"Sex-O Olympic-O"
13th Planet Records - 2009
CD
Definitely disbanded Ministry last year (not a bad idea at all, judging from the inconstant quality of their latest outputs), Al Jourgensen is back on track with his demented side-project Revolting Cocks, active, even if not continuously, since 1986. Meanwhile, the line-up has been stabilized around Clayton Worbeck, Sin Quirin and Joshua Bardford, as well as veterans Luc Van Acker and Phildo Owen, involved into remixes and live appearances. "Sex-O Olympic-O" fortunately leaves behind the ultra-metal sound of its lame predecessor "Cocked And Loaded" to regain the atmospheres of the clownish past discography, like "Beers, Steers And Queers", or "Linger Ficken' Good", conjured in the best episodes of this new chapter made of psychopatic wrestlers, cyborg cowboys, maniac rednecks, beer and bullshits without limits.
We start with "Hookerbot 3000", exalting mix of pulsating electronics and guitars, brand-new anthem ready for the alternative dancefloors, to proceed through "Keys To The City", tough southern rock with epic choruses, and change then completely sound with "Cousins" and "Touch Screen": drum machine, EBM, pulsating bass and exciting rhythms. Joshua Bradford's vocals are enough powerful and exciting not to make Chris Connelly be missed too much, and he perfectly works when coupled with Jourgensen's roars. The latter, however, has loads of fun getting out of his clichés this time, for example singing with clean and melodic voice on "Cousins"... for a moment it seems to be back to Ministry's "Twitch"! The CD's highlight is surely "I Am Not Gay", a real hymn that has been ravaging on the Internet for about a year now, a powerful and irresistible disco-EBM suddenly torn apart by distorted guitar riffs and Jourgensen's hallucinated screams. Easy to guess that this song is going to become a stable host in every dancefloor worth of such name.
Surprises aren't over however, as the thrashing "Abundant Redundancy" delivers us the track we would have liked to listen from Ministry in the last fifteen years: deflagrating guitars and electronic rhythms in pure road-roller style, combining into what once upon a time was called "industrial metal", and today still seems to make sense thanks to this song. In the final sequence of this demented B-movie we find "Lewd Ferrigno" (winning the prize for the best title!), an "epic" narration with contents you can easily guess, and a remix of "Hookerbot 3000", not as good as the original. If you loved the original Wax Trax! scene, the classic Ministry and, of course, Revolting Cocks, don't hesitate to dive into "Sex-O Olympic-O", you won't be disappointed. Good ol' Jourgensen still manages to surprise us.
