SATORI

"Kanashibari"

Cold Spring - 2008

CD

Satori, one of the old UK power-electronics bands released by Broken Flag in the 1980s', are now back with a full live and studio activity. Original members Dave Kirby and Rob Maycock left the sceptre to Niel Chaney (of Pessary fame) and Justin Mitchell, the boss of Cold Spring himself. After the Japanese tour with Sutcliffe Jugend two years ago, it's now time for a new full-length release, the first since the classic "Infect" compilation and the old tapes. "Kanashibari", a Japanese word standing for "sleep paralysis", well exemplifies the new course of Satori's music: gone are noise and sonic assaults, in stead we are wrapped by a deep and pitch black dark ambient, perfectly matching with Henry Fuseli's classic painting "The Nightmare" , which is reproduced on the backcover.

It's also interesting to notice that Satori now present their music as Fortean electronics: the source of inspiration is writer Charles H. Fort, who became very popular between the 1920s' and 1930s' with books about paranormal and anomalous phenomena. Imagine then to listen to the soundtrack to a weird science investigation about the unexplained, or to a Gothic nightmare. The result brings good atmospheres with the use of overwhelming ambient strata and occasional percussive elements. Nothing groundbreaking or revealing, but undoubtedly a good product. "Kanashibari" was originally released on vinyl in Japan with a different artwork in April 2008 by Dogma Chase.
