ZILVERHILL

"Latent-Active-Descent"

Adeptsound / Blind Shouter - 2009

CD

Second effort for Australian Zilverhill, after last year's interesting debut "+ Eötvös +". The new CD "Latent-Active-Descent" is subdivided into three section, ideally reflecting the three moments suggested by the title. The music is even more minimal, distant and eerie than before, with raw synth soundscapes, reverberated voices and enigmatic atmospheres. Opening "Cornerstone" features percussions and disquieting sounds, offering the only slightly dynamic moment of the whole album, whereas the rest relies more on the ambient side, occasionally enriched by noises of various nature, occasional ghostly voices, repetitive tinklings, etc.

Even after a few listening sessions, aimed to capture the less evident corners and more subtle aspects of these new recordings, the general impression remains the same: Zilverhill's second CD lacks a truly captivating edge, a genuine exciting moment, as it keep lingering along a low-key experimental ambient profile, hard to appreciate unless you're a die-hard connoisseur and collector of these difficult sound realms. Let's wait, then, for a third installation to see if they will be able to surprise us.
